Exhibition - NICHT GESEllSCHAFTSFÄHIG - Fotographien James Dean & The Misfits

The Hofmobiliendepot is mounting two photographic exhibitions which can be subsumed together under the title Socially Unacceptable: "James Dean - Fifty Years Ago” and "The Misfits”. The photographs in both exhibitions are the work of photographers who belonged to the renowned New York Magnum agency. "The Misfits” is on the one hand the title of a film starring Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift (screenplay by Arthur Miller, directed by John Huston) from 1960 and on the other hand an apposite description for the noncon-formist actor and rebel James Dean.

In 1955 the photographer Dennis Stock travelled with James Dean to places that held a special meaning for the young actor and had had a strong formative influence on him: Fairmount, his home town in Indiana, New York and Hollywood. On this journey Stock created extraordinary and touching images of Hollywood’s immortal rebel figure.

" The Misfits” was shot in the Nevada desert in 1960. Marilyn Monroe had been given her long-desired role as a character actress. However, the shooting of the film turned into a disaster. The film was panned by the critics but nonetheless became a legend – it was after all to be the last time Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable appeared on screen. The Magnum agency negotiated an exclusive contract to cover the film and sent nine photographers to Nevada. Inge Morath, Ernst Haas, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eve Arnold, Cornell Capa, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Erich Hartmann and Dennis Stock have left us a richly evocative record of the atmosphere on the set.
